Coffee Lovers??? Or Not???
There are a lot of mixed opinions on coffee and health, so we thought we would share our opinion with you, plus a few facts too.
Not only does the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans awaken our senses, it has a number of amazing benefits. Now we aren't talking about that instant rubbish, we mean actual good quality ground coffee beans (organic if possible) are actually good for you if they are drunk without all of the not so good additions like sugar, artificial sweeteners, pasteurised milk and soy milk (that's another topic in itself).
Coffee beans are packed with antioxidants (particularly the type that have powerful disease fighting properties) and nutrients that can improve your health. You don't have to dig too deep into research to learn that coffee can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. It is even said that coffee drinkers out live non coffee drinkers.
Coffee can help to improve energy levels, brain function and mood. Many of you know that we aren't huge on supplements, instead, we use natural food sources for all of our nutritional requirements. A very common question we are asked about is pre workout supplementation. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY ARTIFICIAL PRE WORKOUT SUPPLEMENTS, but we do know this, studies show that drinking coffee before a workout, increases work capacity and performance. It has stood the test of time amongst the athletic population for a very good reason. It works!
So now, we will touch on some of the negatives of coffee. As many people know, it can stop you from having a good night's sleep. Depending on how sensitive you are to coffee, if you love the benefits of coffee, you may need to stop drinking it past a certain time. A general rule that we like to recommend is to not drink coffee past 3pm. Caffeine has a half life of 6 hours. This means that if you have coffee at 3pm, it is the equivalent amount of caffeine as having half of that coffee at 9pm and the average person goes to bed at 10.30pm, so for some people this may have a negative impact on sleep. Depending on how sensitive you are to the caffeine and its effect on your sleep, you my need to throw in the towel to your coffee consumption a little earlier in the day. We have even been known to recommend people stop drinking it after 12pm.
In our opinion, the benefits of Coffee outweigh the negatives, but we are sitting on the fence when recommending if people should drink it or not. What we will leave you with is how we like our coffee.
Diana - “Long Black - this is the lowest in calories and I just love the taste.”
Felicia - “None at all. Thats right, I don't actually drink coffee. Don't judge me, but i just don't like the taste. I love the smell though :)”
We though we would ask Felicia's hubby Sebastian aka Australian Strength Coach how he likes his coffee, as well as his opinion on it -
“Double shot with full fat cream. The cream is so yummy and rich, and it doesn't bloat my belly like milk does. It is actually a healthier alternative to milk, except of course for the higher amount of calories. Hear me out for a second. Full Fat Cream doesn't bloat me. One of the most important parts of overall body health is gut health and like many people, pasteurised milk in my coffee is followed up very quickly by a sit down visit to the toilet. Sorry to put the thought in your head. Cream is different to milk in the way that the body doesn't have that same lactose intolerance response that it does with milk. What you must also remember is that I train with heavy weights for an average of two and a half hours per day, so the extra calories from the cream don't even hit the sides on my total daily calorie expenditure. Would I recommend cream for my babe of a wife? I sure would, but if she wants to keep that lovely little figure, she would just have to sacrifice calories from some of her other meals in favour of that coffee. Just as well she doesn't drink coffee.”
We hope we have helped you make better choices when ordering or making that next coffee. And for all you coffee lovers out there that thought drinking coffee is a bad thing, lose the guilt, you are quite possibly doing yourself a favour after all.
Happy Drinking Friends!
